Objective
To create a contemporary space that combines the architecture and the territory of the complex. To design a tropical park with a waterfall on the rooftop of one of the towers.
Challenge
To design an iconic public space that emphasizes the futuristic aspect of the architecture of the residential complex. To integrate street space into the entrance to the complex.
Solution
The new visual contour of the stylobate accentuates the shapes of the buildings and joints them into a single structure. We opened up the view from the street and granted pedestrians barrier-free access to the territory. We created a futuristic architectural structure that combines the stylobate, the vehicle entrance to the underground parking and the fountains into a single entity. We developed a concept for the rooftop park which has a waterfall with a lake, a tropical and magic garden, areas for relaxation and contemplation.

Location

The residential complex is located in the center of Kyiv in its Pechersky district.

The Taryan Towers Complex has access to three transportation arteries: Velyka Vasylkivska street, Druzhby Narodiv boulevard, Lesi Ukrainky boulevard. Three metro stations, Lybidska, Palats Ukraina, and Druzhby Narodiv, are within walking distance.

The three towers were designed by John Dawes, a British architect, who was inspired by the contemporary architecture of Dubai, the multifaceted Singapore, and the traditional London.

/ Taryan Towers Residential Complex Grounds

When we began our work, the towers were already under construction on the territory of the complex, the underground parking was taking shape, and a part of the stylobate was already completed.

/ Taryan Towers Residential Complex Grounds

We worked on several areas at different levels of the Taryan Towers complex:

  • at level –6.500—street, supermarket entrance, vehicle entrance to and exit from the parking area;

  • at level ±0.000—entrance complex, courtyard;

  • at level +13.800—green rooftop;

  • at level +116.000—park with a lake and a waterfall.

The objective was to design a space that has all the necessary functions and looks just as great at eye-level as it does from other levels of the complex and the apartment windows.

Concept

We created a contemporary space that functions as one system and has a distinct character. For this, we combined the architecture of the complex, landscape architecture, functional content, and the adjacent street.

We formed a new visual contour of the stylobate, which organically accentuates the form of the building.

Entrance

There is access to Taryan Towers from Ioan Pavlo II Street. The street runs on a terrain that has a height elevation difference of up to seven meters along the stylobate wall of the complex.

The initial specifications had a vehicle entrance only. The pedestrians had to walk on the street to get to the residential complex. A high stylobate wall separated the space from the street. The fountains had a supporting structure that kept them partially hidden from the street.

We took down a part of the stylobate and decreased its height. A clear, glass fence replaced the concrete wall fencing of the stylobate in order to open up the view from the street. The difference in height elevation was compensated by stairs, which serve two purposes—that of entrance and exit, and seating. Next to them, we organized barrier-free access and a pedestrian zone.

We combined the stylobate with the entrance to the underground parking area and the fountains into a single architectural unit.

The new piece of architecture is a location marker and a central point of the entrance. Its unforgettable futuristic shape reflects the architectural character of the Taryan Towers Residential Complex.

The structure is created from the landscape. It brings together the stylobate, the entrance to the underground parking area, and the fountains. The structure allowed us to lighten a part of the stylobate, which opened up the view from the street.

The siding is constructed from custom-made, concrete elements, which gives the structure a monumental look and accentuates the infinite flow of the space.

The space is accessible to everyone, as there are no curbs. The vehicle zone is level with the pedestrian zone. Thin lines of the pavement dictate the direction of movement and repeat the flow of the contours of the building, bringing all the elements together.

The pavement is made of various types of natural stone. The gradient is as follows: the rocks that are darkest and smallest are closest to the building, but as they pan out further, they get bigger and lighter. This makes the space feel different, but unified by a single system.

A heating system will ensure that the fountains can function year-round.

The two parts of the fountain flow into each other smoothly. They submerge under the pavement and come together to form a single object. The presence of mist makes the submerging look more realistic. To create the effect, we place lighting and a mist dispersing system in the niche between the walkway and the fountain.

The dark stones of the fountain basin create a mirror effect underwater and contrast with the buildings, which makes the fountain look distinctive and unique.

Lounge plaza

/ Taryan Towers Residential Complex Grounds

The lounge zone is a private space accessible only to residents. It is a quiet and cozy place that provides relaxation amidst the sound of water and the smell of pine.

The plaza is designed for the entire family to have fun: a playground is on one side of the square, while sports facilities are on the other. A water wall adds to the feeling of serenity; the sound of flowing water slows the rhythm of the space and sets it apart from other zones.

Playground

The atmosphere of the playground takes us to another planet. The playground elements follow a space theme. Their shape was inspired by the idea of the extraterrestrial plants that “grow” in the magic garden on the Taryan Towers rooftop.

The area is divided into zones according to age and types of activity:

  • Hills separate the quiet zone from the active part. Kids can also hide in the pavilion. The pavilion has elements for children under six years old, such as a sandbox, a balance toy, children’s table and chairs.
  • The active play zone has a main vertical element with hills on both sides. There is more space there for the active games of children over six years old.
  • The mixed zone for children from three to six years old has seating and swings.

The central playground element combines various activities for children, such as slides, netting, rock climbing elements, hiding places. Its appearance is consistent with the main idea of the playground.

The wooden pavilion is bionic in shape. Its contours link it with the sandbox, and the pavement weaves it into the general structure

Green third floor rooftop

/ Taryan Towers Residential Complex Grounds

The green rooftop is located at the third-floor level between the towers 2 and 3. The rooftop’s sole purpose to be viewed from different levels of the complex, such as the courtyard, the pool, the apartments, the observation deck. It increases the green area of the complex and acts as a bridge that visually unifies the space of the stylobate.

We planted trees along the perimeter of the rooftop fence so that they would be visible from the courtyard at level 0.000. When viewed from the top, this green zone flows seamlessly with the rest of the greenery on the territory. We distributed the plants evenly according to their seasonal decorative properties. We chose low-maintenance plants and took into consideration their growing conditions.

Tropical park and observation decks

Each building of the Taryan Towers has a unique rooftop design concept:

  • Tower 1—signature cuisine restaurant with a panoramic view.
  • Tower 2—a year-round park with an artificial lake and a winter garden.
  • Tower 3—a museum of the future with an innovations and entertainment zone, a film theater, and a planetarium.

We designed a park in two of the towers and a space for leisurely walks that goes over the open bridges and unifies the concepts of the three towers. We organized areas for recreation and relaxation, which take full advantage of the observation points and let the residents and their guests get a bird’s eye view of Kyiv.

The rooftop park gives its visitors the feeling of fantasy. The garden is organized according to the various zones, such as the open plaza, the waterfall and the lake, the tropical jungle, the magic forest, and another planet. Every zone has a different atmosphere and provides a unique experience at 116 meters above ground.

As the visitors exit the elevator, they are greeted by an open plaza with a waterfall, the freshness of water and the color of water lilies.

/ Taryan Towers Residential Complex Grounds

To the right of the elevator, there is the jungle with its rich and humid atmosphere that draws the visitor in right away. The greenery comes up from all sides, cascading from suspended barrel planters, coming down the walls, taking on different shapes and colors. All of this creates the feeling of a dense, wild, tropical jungle.

As we move along, the shapes and colors become wilder, brighter, more fantasy-like. It is the magic garden opening up. Unexpected shapes take form in the red and purple soil. Plants and forms, lit with surrealistic lighting, mix in harmony giving the visitor the impression that all of it is real. The visitor walks among the trees, gets lost in front of the polygonal mirror that reflects different angles. The garden also has a wooden boardwalk and some suspended seating—the perfect area to stop and take a break.

The other planet zone, located between the jungle and the magic garden, has a panoramic view. The mood is otherworldly here. It is intensified by holographic 3D content on the windows. Visitors can look at planets and falling stars, imagine themselves inside a space shuttle, or watch the birth of a supernova. To make this possible, the windows are treated with special coating that makes projections visible yet remains clear.
